Sur Tal – An Evening of Indian Classical Music
Featuring: Shri Sangeet Mishra, Basant Madhur and the students of the Sargam School of Music
Saturday July 9, 6 – 9 pm
Blockhouse Bay Community Hall
524 Blockhouse Bay Rd, Blockhouse Bay
Taking advantage of renowned performer Shri Sangeet Mishra’s forthcoming visit to Auckland, the Sargam School of Music has invited him to perform classical sarangi music. Sangeet Mishra has learnt music from his father Pandit Santosh Mishra and represents the 8th generation of sarangi masters. Based in Mumbai, Sangeet is a talented musician who regularly performs solo recitals, collaborations and as accompanist in India and internationally. Listen to Mishra and his father talk about and perform on the sarangi on ABC radio here.
Also performing is Blockhouse Bay resident and widely acknowledged tabla player Basant Madhur. Born into a family of musicians, he took early training from his elder brother Deepak Madhur and received expert guidance from Punjab Gharana tabla maestro, the late Pt. Pawan Kumar Verma. Madhur moved to New Zealand in 2002 and established the Sargam School of Indian Music. Madhur performs on the international stage, but also shares his music locally in West Auckland, participating in the Whau Arts Festival, 2015 and performing at Te Uru in May 2016.
The evening will include performances by his students, featuring classical Indian vocal, tabla and Sitar recitals. Blockhouse Bay is fortunate to have a dedicated performer and teacher of classical Indian music such as Madhur and this evening is an opportunity to experience highly skilled musicians and celebrate the talents of his students in Auckland.
