Ceramic Taro

Ceramic Taro

2023

Jimmy Ma’ia’i with Rosebank Primary School

This was a workshop between artist Jimmy Ma’ia’i and primary school students from the Rosebank Primary School where the artist used to attend. Jimmy Ma’ia’i is of Sāmoan and Scottish descent, used to go to Rosebank Primary School and his practice makes use of found objects and readymade materials. Jimmy draws upon his mixed-heritage, as well as experiences of cultural dislocation and colonisation to inform his sculptures.

“Thanks to Jimmy, a new and local artist in the Whau for allowing our tamariki to experiment with what culture and identity look like to them through designing/painting their own taro inspired ceramic vases, they were so proud to show what they had produced, thank you!” – Jess Beatie
