1 – 4 pm, 9 September
Whau River Portage, starting at Karaka Park, Green Bay (Karaka Park is found at the end of Portage Rd)
Hikoi with us along the Whau River portage accompanied by haki (flags) created by Charlotte and Raewyn Graham. Pause along the way to discover the Māori history and ecology of the area through korero, dance and poetry. The hikoi will draw on oral stories recorded by historian George Samuel Graham, Charlotte and Raewyn’s ancestor. They will be joined by Pita Turei and Aruna Po-Ching.
The hikoi starts at Karaka Park at Green Bay at the end of Portage Rd. It will finish 3 hours later at the top of Craigavon Park, on Portage Rd a 5 min walk from where we started.
What to bring:
Its an outdoor walk, and its winter so please dress warmly, bring a rain coat or umbrella and walking shoes. There will be steps and we’ll be on gravel paths but it still may be a little muddy. The hikoi will take about 3 hours so please bring some water and a snack in case you get hungry along the way.
