We are Tupumaiaga A Niue Trust, an organisation actively providing Niue language, heritage arts and cultural programmes since 2007- 2025. We run creative programmes for our Niue youth and families and are Auckland based.
Our programmes include making traditional Niue arts. These include the vaka- canoe, war spears (katoua), log drums (nafa), hiapo printing, sewing ie pili (bedsheets) and lalaga kato (weave bags). We also run performance arts workshops . These include learning Niue song and dances including the meke, takalo war dance, and singing traditional hymns. This is our Aga Fakamotu.
We have worked with our communities across Aotearoa, Australia and Niue. We also provide youth mentorship within our committee, for our young arts professionals to be Niue leaders, gaining valuable experience in trust management. As part of the Whau Pasifika Festival 2026 we aim to bring to the community an interactive day of heritage arts & crafts with a games day and sewing session in a workshop programme.
Niue Games – Our trust will promote Pacific Language retention through designing bi-lingual board , block and card games in English and Vagahau Niue. We would promote a games session to the community which aims to help with Niue language retention for everyone who is interested in learning. The creative outcomes would be for our designer to create some newly designed board games for the community with Niuean traditional themes and culture. Games will include snakes & ladders, card & block games and memory games in Niuean and English languages with a Niuean cultural focus. Our aim is to get our community excited about learning our Vagahau Niue because it is listed as endangered by UNESCO.
Sewing for Families – Our trust will focus on Mums & Babies making a traditional small Niuean baby bedsheet called Ie Pili. We will use traditional designed small printed fabric for Mums. The creative outcomes will see our trust designing some new small blocks stencils with island designs such as coconuts, lau ti leaves, banana leaves, hiapo patterns, fish , shells and we will print these onto fabric. These printed fabrics will be ready for sewing day and made available for sewing baby ie pili with different colours that promote our island. Our trust welcomes anyone who wants to learn about our Niue people, language, heritage arts and culture.
