New artwork brightens Avondale Lifecare!

April 2025

Avondale Lifecare and Avondale College

Avondale Lifecare has received a bold and beautiful new addition to its walls, a stunning mural designed by Year 13 student Maisy, painted in collaboration with friends Hikari and Isla. The artwork features a vibrant map of Aotearoa that reflects the rich multicultural identity of our local community.

Home to 18 women living with dementia, the Avondale Lifecare residents yearned to bring new life into their shared space. In response to the creative callout, art students from Avondale College took on the challenge and created a stunning visual celebration of place and community.

Violet Goodwin – Activities Coordinator at Avondale Lifecare, shared that residents have been engaging with the artwork by tracing the colourful patterns with their hands. This tactile interaction has sparked an abundance of storytelling and has created meaningful connections to memories and place.

“As the Whau Arts Broker, it was a privilege to help make this project happen. Seeing it come to life for the young artists, residents and staff was truly special.” – Jody Yawa McMillan, Whau Arts Broker

A special thanks to Avondale Lifecare and the Whau Local Board for funding this project.
